In January 1947, Hilla Rebay placed a large order with W. Atlee Burpee Co. for a wide variety of flower and vegetable seeds. Petunias, zinnia, snapdragons, and marigolds are all on the receipt, as well as cauliflower, spinach, peas, kale, and muskmelon. As the winter winds down but the ground remains frozen, I find myself wishing I could put on my mud boots and travel back in time to Franton Court, Hilla Rebay’s home in Connecticut, in the spring of 1947, to help with the planting.
